This Sauerkraut Casserole with Ground Beef is a deliciously layered baked dish featuring tangy sauerkraut, savory ground beef, creamy sour cream, and melted cheese. Perfect for a comforting dinner, it combines flavors and textures in a hearty casserole that’s baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 3 cups sauerkraut
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice)
  • 2 cups ground beef
  • 5 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 2 cups sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare and Heat the Oven: Gather all your ingredients first. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Grease the Casserole Dish: Lightly brush olive oil on the bottom and sides of the casserole dish to prevent sticking and add flavor.
  3. Assemble the First Layer: Spread 1 cup of sauerkraut evenly on the bottom of the greased dish. Next, add a layer of shredded cheese over the sauerkraut, followed by an even layer of ground beef.
  4. Add the Second Layer: Sprinkle finely chopped garlic evenly over the first layer. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Add the remaining sauerkraut as a second layer on top.
  5. Top with Sour Cream: Spread 2 cups of sour cream smoothly over the sauerkraut layer to add creaminess and bind the casserole ingredients together.
  6. Finish with Cheese and Cover: Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheese over the sour cream layer. Cover the casserole dish tightly with aluminum foil to keep moisture and flavor locked in during baking.
  7. Bake the Casserole: Place the covered casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes, allowing all flavors to meld.
  8. Uncover and Brown the Cheese: After 35 minutes, remove the aluminum foil carefully and continue baking uncovered for the last 10 minutes to brown and crisp the cheese topping.
  9. Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy the warm, flavorful layers of this sauerkraut casserole.

Notes

  • You can use any shredded cheese you prefer, such as mozzarella, Swiss, or a cheese blend.
  • Drain some of the sauerkraut juice if your sauerkraut is very wet to prevent the casserole from becoming too soggy.
  • For a milder garlic flavor, sauté the garlic briefly before layering.
  • This casserole pairs well with a simple green salad or crusty bread.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated the next day for a quick meal.
