Description

This Salisbury Steak recipe features juicy ground beef patties smothered in a rich, savory onion and beef gravy. Perfectly seasoned and pan-seared to golden brown, these classic American comfort food steaks are quick and easy to make on the stovetop, ideal served with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a hearty family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Salisbury Steak Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (check for gluten-free)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Gravy

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons cold water (slurry)

Instructions

  1. Mix the Patty Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined to avoid tough patties, then form into 4 oval-shaped patties.
  2. Cook the Patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, until they develop a browned crust. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté Onions for Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat and sauté the thinly sliced onions until softened and golden brown, about 5 to 7 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  4. Add Liquids for Gravy: Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Bring the mixture to a simmer, letting the flavors meld together.
  5. Thicken the Gravy: Stir in the cornstarch slurry gradually and cook, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Combine Patties and Gravy: Return the patties to the skillet, spoon the rich gravy over them. Cover the skillet and simmer gently for 10 minutes to cook through and allow flavors to blend deeply.
  7. Serve: Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, spooning extra gravy over the top. Pair with creamy mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a comforting meal.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, finely chopped mushrooms can be added to the onions while sautéing.
  • Ground turkey or chicken can be used as a lighter alternative to beef.
  • To keep gluten-free, substitute breadcrumbs and Worcestershire sauce accordingly.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and can be reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
