Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 1 large apple (Fuji, Granny Smith, or any tart apple)
Dumpling Dough
- 1 can Pillsbury Crescent dough
Syrup
- 1/2 cup butter
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup Mountain Dew (or any lemon-lime soda)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and to ensure easy cleanup.
- Prepare the Apples: Peel and core the apple, then cut it into 8 equal slices, ensuring uniform sizes for even cooking.
- Wrap Apple Slices: Unroll the crescent dough and wrap each apple slice with a crescent triangle, starting from the wide end to securely enclose the apple.
- Arrange Dumplings: Place the wrapped apple slices in the prepared baking dish, spacing them slightly apart to allow for expansion during baking.
- Make Syrup: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in sugar and cinnamon until combined and the sugar begins to dissolve. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Add Syrup to Dumplings: Pour the butter-sugar mixture evenly over the wrapped apples in the baking dish.
- Add Soda: Carefully pour the Mountain Dew around the edges of the dish, avoiding pouring directly over the dumplings to keep the dough from getting soggy.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the syrup is bubbly.
- Serve: Serve the apple dumplings warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an added indulgence.
Notes
- Choose tart apples like Granny Smith or Fuji for the best balance of sweetness and tartness.
- If you prefer, substitute lemon-lime soda with ginger ale or sparkling water with a splash of lemon juice.
- Keep an eye on the dumplings toward the end to avoid over-browning.
- These dumplings can be reheated in the microwave or oven and are best enjoyed fresh.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute crescent dough with gluten-free pastry dough.
