Ingredients
Scale
Steak and Vegetables
- 1 lb thinly sliced ribeye steak or beef sirloin
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms (such as cremini or white button)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Sandwich Assembly
- 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
- 8 slices provolone cheese
Instructions
- Sauté Vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, green bell peppers, and mushrooms. Sauté for 6–8 minutes until the vegetables are softened and lightly caramelized. Remove the vegetables from the skillet and set them aside.
- Cook the Steak: In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the thinly sliced steak and season with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meat is browned and just cooked through.
- Combine Ingredients: Return the sautéed vegetables to the skillet with the cooked steak. Stir everything together to combine the flavors evenly.
- Prepare Sandwiches: Split the hoagie rolls and place two slices of provolone cheese inside each roll. Spoon the hot steak and mushroom mixture generously over the cheese.
- Melt Cheese and Toast Rolls (Optional): For a melted, toasted finish, place the filled sandwiches under the broiler for 1–2 minutes until the cheese melts and the rolls are lightly toasted. Serve immediately while hot for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For a more authentic Philly experience, use Amoroso rolls and Cheez Whiz instead of provolone cheese.
- You can cook the steak and vegetables together on a griddle for a true Philly-style finish.
- Broiling the sandwiches is optional but enhances the melted cheese and toasty roll texture.
- Thinly slicing the steak ensures quick cooking and tender bites.
