Description
These Orange Glazed Butterflake Rolls are a delightful treat perfect for breakfast or brunch. The soft, fluffy rolls are infused with orange zest and topped with a sweet orange glaze, making them a citrusy delight.
Ingredients
Dough:
- 3½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup whole milk
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- 2 large eggs
- Zest of 1 orange
Orange Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons fresh orange juice
- ½ teaspoon orange zest
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 1 to 1½ hours.
- Punch down the dough and divide into 12 equal portions.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15–18 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter just until warm and the butter is melted. Let cool slightly if hot. Add the warm milk mixture to the flour mixture. Beat in the eggs and orange zest until smooth. Gradually stir in the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
Roll each portion into a ball, then cut 3 slits into each ball without cutting all the way through (to create the “butterflake” effect). Lightly brush with melted butter and place into a greased muffin tin. Cover and let rise again for about 30–40 minutes.
While the rolls bake, whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, and zest to make the glaze. Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls right after baking. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- For extra richness, brush the rolls with orange-infused butter before baking.
- These rolls freeze well—just reheat and glaze before serving.
- You can also add a touch of vanilla extract to the glaze for a smoother flavor.
