Description

Orange Glazed Butterflake Rolls are soft, pull-apart rolls with delicate layers brushed in butter and topped with a sweet, citrusy glaze. Perfect for brunch, holidays, or special breakfasts, these tender rolls melt in your mouth and bring a bright pop of orange flavor to your table.

Ingredients

Scale

For the rolls:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg

For layering:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp orange juice
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Make Dough: Add melted butter, egg, salt, and flour to the yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms, then knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. First Rise: Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape Rolls: Roll the dough out on a floured surface into a large rectangle about 12×18 inches. Brush with melted butter, cut into strips, stack these strips, then slice into squares.
  5. Prepare for Second Rise: Place stacks vertically into a greased muffin tin, cover, and let rise again for 30–40 minutes until puffy.
  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the rolls for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Make Glaze: While the rolls bake, whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract to make the glaze.
  8. Glaze and Serve: Drizzle the orange glaze over the warm rolls before serving for a sweet, citrusy finish.

Notes

  • You can make these a day ahead and reheat gently before glazing.
  • Try adding a touch of cardamom or cinnamon to the dough for a spiced variation.
