Description

Enjoy the traditional taste of Ireland with this easy-to-make Irish Soda Bread. This classic bread requires no yeast and comes together quickly for a delicious treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and grease a baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt. Make a well in the center.
  3. Add Buttermilk: Pour buttermilk into the well. Stir with a spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Knead and Shape: Turn dough onto a floured surface, knead briefly, shape into a round loaf, and place on the baking sheet.
  5. Bake: Cut an ‘X’ on the loaf, bake for 35–45 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding.
  6. Cool and Serve: Cool on a rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For a sweeter bread, add sugar. Raisins or currants can be mixed in for a traditional twist.
  • Avoid over-kneading to maintain a tender texture.
