Description

This Garlic Chicken Lo Mein recipe is a quick and flavorful stir-fry dish featuring tender chicken, crisp vegetables, and savory garlic sauce tossed with lo mein noodles. Perfect for a satisfying weeknight dinner, it combines a medley of Asian-inspired sauces for a vibrant and hearty meal ready in just 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein

  • 1 lb chicken breast or thighs, thinly sliced

Noodles

  • 8 oz lo mein noodles (or substitute with spaghetti or other noodles)

Vegetables

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium carrot, julienned or thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Sauce & Seasoning

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional for added sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Noodles: Prepare the lo mein noodles according to the package instructions. Once cooked, drain the noodles and set aside, reserving 1/4 cup of the cooking water in case you need to thin the sauce later.
  2. Prepare the Chicken: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced chicken and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until the chicken is browned and fully cooked. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside.
  3. Sauté the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the sliced onion, bell pepper, and carrot. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are tender but retain some crispness. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Make the Garlic Sauce: While the vegetables cook, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce (if using), sesame oil, rice vinegar, sugar, ground ginger (if using), and red pepper flakes (if using) in a small bowl until well combined.
  5. Combine the Ingredients: Return the cooked chicken to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour the prepared garlic sauce over the mixture and toss to coat evenly. If the sauce appears too thick, add a small amount of the reserved noodle cooking water to reach desired consistency. Add the cooked noodles and toss everything together to evenly coat the noodles with sauce.
  6. Serve: Garnish the dish with chopped green onions and serve immediately while hot. Enjoy your homemade Garlic Chicken Lo Mein!

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute chicken with tofu or additional vegetables and omit oyster sauce.
  • If lo mein noodles are unavailable, spaghetti or linguine noodles make a suitable alternative.
  • Adjust red pepper flakes to control the spice level or omit for a mild flavor.
  • Sauce thickness can be adjusted by adding reserved noodle water gradually.
  • This dish reheats well and makes excellent leftovers for lunch or dinner.
