Cake:
- 2½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1½ cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup sour cream
- ½ cup rainbow sprinkles (jimmies, not nonpareils)
Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 3½ cups powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
- additional sprinkles for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare cake pans.
- Mix dry ingredients: Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
- Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla, then stir in sour cream.
- Combine wet and dry: Alternately add flour mixture and milk to the wet ingredients, then fold in sprinkles.
- Bake: Divide batter, bake for 25–30 minutes, then cool.
- Make frosting: Beat butter, add powdered sugar, cream, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
- Frost cakes: Frost cooled cakes and garnish with sprinkles.
