  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup rainbow sprinkles (jimmies, not nonpareils)

Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3½ cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt
  • additional sprinkles for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare cake pans.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla, then stir in sour cream.
  4. Combine wet and dry: Alternately add flour mixture and milk to the wet ingredients, then fold in sprinkles.
  5. Bake: Divide batter, bake for 25–30 minutes, then cool.
  6. Make frosting: Beat butter, add powdered sugar, cream, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
