Description

Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, these Fried Mac and Cheese Balls are a deliciously indulgent appetizer or snack. Made from chilled macaroni and cheese combined with shredded cheddar, then breaded and deep-fried to golden perfection, they deliver a satisfying crunch and a comforting cheesy center. Perfect for parties, game days, or anytime you crave a rich, cheesy treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked macaroni and cheese, chilled
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Bread Coating

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs (panko or regular)

Frying

  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine Mac and Cheese: In a large bowl, mix the chilled cooked macaroni and cheese with shredded cheddar cheese until well incorporated.
  2. Shape and Freeze: Form the mixture into 1.5-inch balls using your hands or a scoop, then place them on a baking sheet. Freeze the balls for at least 1 hour to firm up, which helps maintain their shape during frying.
  3. Prepare Breading Station: Set up three separate shallow bowls—one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumbs—to organize the breading process efficiently.
  4. Bread the Balls: Remove the mac and cheese balls from the freezer. Roll each ball first in the flour, coating evenly, then dip into the beaten eggs, and finally coat thoroughly with breadcrumbs to create a crispy outer layer.
  5. Heat Oil: In a deep fryer or a large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C), ensuring it’s hot enough for frying but not smoking.
  6. Fry Until Golden: Carefully place the breaded mac and cheese balls into the hot oil in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 3 to 4 minutes or until they turn a golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  7. Season and Serve: While still warm, season the fried mac and cheese balls with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Freezing the mac and cheese balls before breading and frying is essential to prevent them from falling apart in the hot oil.
  • Use panko breadcrumbs for an extra crispy texture.
  • If you don’t have a deep fryer, use a heavy-bottomed pot and a thermometer to maintain oil temperature.
  • Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, such as marinara, ranch, or spicy aioli.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in an air fryer or oven to retain crispiness.
