Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef (93% lean)
- ¼ cup red wine (water can be substituted)
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (28-ounce) can petite diced tomatoes, drained
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- Red pepper flakes (optional, to taste)
Instructions
- Sauté Onions: Heat the olive oil and butter in a Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Add the diced onions and cook for 4-5 minutes until they become translucent and develop a slight golden color.
- Brown Beef: Push the sautéed onions to the side of the pot. Add the ground beef and let it sear for a couple of minutes on each side before breaking it apart with a spoon to ensure even browning all over.
- Deglaze and Add Garlic: Pour in the red wine (or water if preferred) to deglaze the pot, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom. Allow the liquid to cook off slightly, then add the minced garlic and stir until fragrant.
- Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Mix in the petite diced tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, kosher salt, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes if desired. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the sauce simmer gently for 15 minutes to meld flavors.
- Serve: Serve the meat sauce over cooked spaghetti or your favorite pasta. For enhanced flavor, toss the pasta with the sauce to absorb the rich taste.
Notes
- You can substitute water for red wine if you prefer a non-alcoholic version.
- Adjust red pepper flakes to your spice preference or omit for a milder sauce.
- Use a Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot to prevent burning and ensure even cooking.
- This sauce freezes well for up to 3 months; thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.
- For a richer sauce, consider adding a splash of heavy cream at the end of cooking.
