Description

Crust Custard Pie is a classic and comforting American dessert featuring a creamy custard filling baked in a flaky pie crust. This easy-to-make pie combines simple ingredients like eggs, whole milk, and vanilla extract, offering a smooth, velvety texture that is perfect served chilled or at room temperature. Topped optionally with a sprinkle of nutmeg, it’s a nostalgic treat ideal for family gatherings or a sweet ending to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Crust

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

Custard Filling

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it reaches the proper temperature for baking the custard pie.
  2. Prepare the pie crust: Place the unbaked 9-inch pie crust into a pie dish and crimp the edges neatly to hold the filling securely during baking.
  3. Mix custard ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and salt until the mixture is uniform and slightly frothy.
  4. Add milk and vanilla: Gradually whisk in the whole milk and vanilla extract, ensuring the custard mixture becomes smooth without any lumps.
  5. Fill the pie crust: Pour the smooth custard mixture into the prepared pie crust evenly. If desired, sprinkle the top with ground nutmeg for added flavor and aroma.
  6. Bake the pie: Transfer the pie carefully to the oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. The custard should set but remain slightly wobbly in the center; a knife inserted near the center should come out clean.
  7. Cool the pie: Remove the pie from the oven and place it on a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, refrigerate the pie for at least 2 hours before serving to enhance the texture and flavor.

Notes

  • For best texture and creaminess, use whole milk in the custard filling.
  • Feel free to add cinnamon or lemon zest to the filling for a flavor twist.
  • This pie can be served chilled directly from the refrigerator or at room temperature.
  • Accompany with fresh berries or a dollop of whipped cream to complement the custard’s richness.
