Sauce:

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Cheese:

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Garnish:

  • Chopped fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan, sauté onion and garlic, whisk in flour, then gradually add milk and cream. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  3. Layer potatoes: Arrange half of the potatoes in the dish, pour half of the sauce, then repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
  4. Add cheese: Top with cheddar and Parmesan cheese.
  5. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes, then uncover and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden and tender.
