Ingredients
Scale
Macaroon Ingredients
- 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
- 2 large egg whites, at room temperature
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Chocolate Coating
- 4 ounces dark chocolate, chopped
- Pink and red heart-shaped sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 325°F (165°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
- Prepare the Coconut Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded coconut, granulated sugar, egg whites, and vanilla extract. Stir until the mixture holds together when pressed but isn’t overly wet, ensuring a good balance for shaping.
- Shape the Macaroons: Using a spoon or a small cookie scoop, form the mixture into small mounds. Press each mound gently to compact them. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing about an inch apart to allow even baking.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers feel set, indicating they are done.
- Cool: Let the macaroons cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer them carefully to a wire rack to cool completely to room temperature before chocolate dipping.
- Chocolate Dipping: Melt the dark chocolate using a double boiler or microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring each time until smooth. Dip the bottom halves of each cooled macaroon into the melted chocolate and allow excess chocolate to drip off.
- Decorate: Place the chocolate-dipped macaroons on the wire rack. While the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle with pink and red heart-shaped sprinkles for a festive touch.
- Set: Allow the chocolate to harden at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes before serving or storing.
Notes
- Ensure egg whites are at room temperature for better volume and texture in the macaroons.
- Use a silicone baking mat or parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease clean-up.
- For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free dark chocolate.
- Store macaroons in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
- To speed up chocolate setting, place dipped macaroons in the fridge for 10-15 minutes.
