Ingredients
Scale
Beef Mixture
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
Casserole
- 1 (28 oz) bag frozen French fries
- Cooking spray
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F to ensure it reaches the right temperature for baking the casserole.
- Cook Beef and Onion: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and finely chopped onion until the beef is browned and the onion is tender, about 7–8 minutes. Drain any excess grease to avoid a greasy casserole.
- Season and Mix: Stir in garlic powder, salt, black pepper, ketchup, and yellow mustard into the cooked beef mixture. Remove from heat, then blend in the sour cream and half of the shredded cheddar cheese until combined.
- Assemble Casserole: Spread the beef mixture evenly into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Top the beef layer with an even layer of frozen French fries. Lightly spray the fries with cooking spray to help them crisp up during baking.
- Bake Fries: Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes or until the French fries are golden, crispy, and cooked through.
- Add Cheese Topping: Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
- Final Melt: Return the casserole to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and is bubbly.
- Rest and Serve: Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow it to set and make it easier to serve.
Notes
- Add pickles or diced tomatoes on top before serving for an authentic cheeseburger flavor boost.
- For a spicy twist, mix a bit of hot sauce into the beef mixture before baking.
