Description

Authentic German Frikadellen are traditional German meat patties made from ground beef mixed with soaked bread, onions, garlic, and spices, pan-fried to a juicy and flavorful perfection. Perfectly seasoned and browned, these patties are a classic main course served with potato salad, mashed potatoes, or crusty bread.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 stale bread roll or 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

For Cooking

  • 2 tablespoons oil or butter for frying

Instructions

  1. Soak the Bread: Soak the bread roll in milk for a few minutes until softened, then squeeze out excess milk and crumble it finely.
  2. Prepare the Meat Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with the soaked bread, diced onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, pepper, sweet paprika, mustard, and chopped parsley. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, taking care not to overwork the mixture to keep the patties tender.
  3. Shape the Patties: Form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval patties, ensuring they are uniform in size for even cooking.
  4. Heat the Skillet: Heat the oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat until hot and shimmering.
  5. Cook the Frikadellen: Place the patties in the skillet and cook for 5 to 6 minutes on one side until browned, then flip and cook for another 5 to 6 minutes on the other side until fully cooked through and nicely browned.
  6. Rest and Serve: Remove the patties from the skillet and let them rest for a few minutes to allow the juices to redistribute before serving.

Notes

  • Frikadellen are traditionally served with potato salad, mashed potatoes, or crusty bread.
  • A mixture of beef and pork can be used instead of only ground beef for a more traditional flavor and richer taste.
